In the Flow

I’ll admit that one of my biggest challenges in life is to let go. Let go of expectations and outcomes. Let go of the need to fight to make things happen. Let go of the need to plan my life and the illusion that I actually have some control.

A week ago I found myself swirling around in a mess, as my already complicated life started to go crazy. Things became overwhelming and I couldn’t manage anymore, so I knew that I had to simply let everything go and hand the steering wheel back to fate.

I’m not saying that this comes easily to me. I’m not saying that this is a comfortable process. In reality it is an act of complete surrender to a path that I have usually been fighting against.

But we do not need to do this alone. I truly believe we are surrounded by guides, angels and guardians who are just waiting to help us. And this is who you need to hand your life over to. How? Simply ask. For clarity, love, guidance, calm, or whatever you seek. When you put questions out into the world, it is compelled to answer.

“Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”
[Matthew 7:7]

The scariest part for me is that often the one thing I want the most, is the thing I really need to let go of, if only to see if it is truly meant to be mine. If you can manage this, and you are in fact meant to have this thing in your life, then it will return to you, purified.

A strange thing that also happens when you surrender, is that life speeds up and a lot of things happen in rapid succession. When we get out of our own way, the flood gates open. This rush can be disconcerting, especially when we incorrectly expect everything to grind to a sudden stop since we have stopped trying and striving. Instead you will find yourself on the roller coaster ride of your life.

And what do you need to do at this point? Ironically it is the last thing our instincts tell us to do as we are racing along at breakneck speed in crazy directions.

Let go!

It is too easy to tighten your grip and put the brakes on, imagining that what is happening is not what you asked for. But it is – just not in the form that you expected, or the process may not yet be complete.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that because you have surrendered, that you do not need to act on what happens. Instead of reacting and driving things, you now need to act carefully and instinctively, observing carefully. Make decisions in the moment, but from that place of peace – that silence inside you where you are aware of the cogs moving and the rush of air on your face, but where you are unaffected.

When you can find this place inside yourself, you will recognise it by the overwhelming sense of calm you will feel. This is what it means to be in control – to realise that you were never in control in the first place. This is what it means to be in the flow – letting the river of life carry you.

Getting life under control is about letting go.

But trust me when I tell you that the universe will always create something infinitely more spectacular for you than your puny mind could have ever have imagined!

So let go and watch the magic unfold…

    • Good luck girl! This is not for the fainthearted! And I find that my mind slips back into the habit of hanging on, without me even knowing it. Good luck letting go. Hand it over… xx

      • Ha ha! Thanks! I was trying to solidify my own experience – they say if you want to learn something, teach it. And you are right. I wish someone had explained it to me in baby steps. I’m still stumbling and falling over, but I keep trying to stand up again. One day it will hopefully stick.
        You’re still a crack up though!! :o)

I thought I would share this amazing segment by very wise wide verse in Knowledge Kiwi.

There is nothing that will hit you harder and knock you on your ass faster then Life it will shatter you to pieces if you let it.

It’s up to you to pick yourself back up and how you respond to adversity is your Testament to Perseverance.
