Off to Greener Pastures 💖

There’s a decapitated chicken in my freezer, tears in my eyes, and blood on my husband’s jeans.

One of my little chickens has been sick lately, and as much as I had hoped she would perk up again, it has not happened. When I saw her this morning, staggering in circles, I knew she had crossed the line into “suffering”. The decision was mine, and only mine, to make.

It’s a hard decision, to effectively order an execution, but it was made out of love and mercy. Watching a small creature suffering simply breaks my heart, especially when I have taken on the responsibility of looking after them.

While I could do the deed myself if I had to, I married a lovely, strong, kind-hearted man who probably felt it was easier to do it himself than deal with me crying for the next 3 days. By doing it himself, I only cry for an evening (and every time I open the freezer between now and rubbish day).

I’m going to be a complete girl about this and use this blog to say goodbye to my lovely little ginger friend. Thank you for all the wonderful eggs. Thank you for doing all the weeding. Thank you for the fertiliser. Thank you for eating all the bad bugs in my garden. Thank you for posing for so many photos to go with my Pullet-zer Prize winning chicken articles.

May you rest in peace and enjoy free-ranging in God’s garden.

    • Thank you x2. It’s always a hard decision with pets. It would help if they could talk, or you could explain to them. Pet ownership is a big responsibility. Thanks for your lovely comment xx 😃💖

  1. Good salute to a departed fr-hen-d. Always good to remember the good done by those who have met an untimely end. Oops, I was not planning on a poem. Growing up on a farm, I realized that farm life was not always cows grazing peacefully in a pasture, sometimes it was hamburger. Cheers. Allan

  2. Wendy, I have tears in my eyes. God only knows how I understand how hard that mercy decision is. God bless you and your kindhearted husband for showing mercy to someone you most definitely Loved. (((HUGS)))!!! And yes, I do believe Love is the right word to use.

  3. Poor, poor little hen. It sounds like her illness had begun to affect her nervous system since she was walking round in circles. You absolutely made the right decision to end her suffering and distress. I know how hard it is though – we kept hens some years ago and I loved them so much. x

  4. I’m sorry to hear this story Wendy 😦 the death of a loved one, whether they have skin, feathers, or fur, is always a difficult death to live through. May she cluck freely in her next life, and I hope your other chicken recovers from the grief and comes to enjoy her new pal ^-^

    • Thank you. Not only have I lost a chicken, but the other one is depressed, and my husband has gone paranoid, thinking she’s avoiding him because he killed her friend. 😂💜🌻 All of this over a sick chicken!! LOL 😀 And now I find myself in a very fowl mood 😂 hee hee

      • That’s so punny!! 😃 LOL! I’m going to tell my husband about that – he’s terrified of sharks from watching that movie, so I maybe I can get him scared of a chomping chicken too!! 😃

  6. This was so good and also so sad, It’s always hard when we have to do things like that. I had to put down a family pet and it tore at me and even did a post about it.
